Lou Malnati’s And Our Appearance on the Travel Channel
In my last post, I had talked some about one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago for deep dish pizza - Lou Malnatis. We first discovered this pizzeria about 4 years ago when we we did a marathon 3500 mile trip that brought us through Chicago on the way to Kalamazoo, MI. Since then we have loved the pizza at Lou Malnatis so much that if were are within an hour of Chicago on a trip we will usually make a detour to stop at Lou Malnatis for some pizza and buy a couple extra to eat later when we crave authentic deep dish Chicago style pizza. Apparently because of our love for Lou Malnatis pizza we also go to make our first TV debut last November on the show Food Paradise on the Travel Channel.
Last November after I finished Step 2 of my medical licensing exam (which was held in Chicago), we decided to visit Lou Malnatis like we always do when we are in Chicago. Little did we know that on that day, the Travel Channel was filming for their show at Malnatis. They went around the restaurant and talked to different people and when they found about how we had driven from Minnesota to get pizza in Chicago (a 5 hour drive), they thought that would make for a great interview.
What was funny was that because the kids had gotten themselves into a good mess with the pizza at our table, they took us to a new table that was nicely setup and then interviewed us. They also treated us to the chocolate chip pizza at Malnatis which the kids throughly enjoyed. We didn't think much of the interview until a couple of months later when we started getting e-mails form people saying that they had randomly flipped over to the Travel Channel and had seen us on T.V. So a couple of weeks ago we finally splurged and bought the episode of Food Paradise from iTunes and wanted to show you guys the clip. I think our five minute interview got cut down to a 4 second bite with Karuna talking as always. So without further ado...look below for the clip on Lou Malnatis and our four seconds of TV fame. Its a big file so bear with it as it loads up. I've also posted some pictures from Malnatis on our most recent trip to the Lawndale community of Chicago. It is a pizzeria that was built in one of the ghettos in Chicago and cooperatively run by Lawndale Community Church. All the profits generated by this pizzeria are given back to the community. Here is a great article on that partnership: Malnati's Gives Back to Ghetto Neighborhood.
